The Things You Must Know About Plumbing Leaks and Freezing

As a homeowner, you’re not really required to be an expert in knowing your plumbing system. However, there’s a bit of emphasis on knowing the basics, at least, especially when it comes to leaks. You see, plumbing leaks are quite a burden and taking care of your exterior piping will help you prevent frozen pipes and eventual leaks. So here are some tips for you to do this:

Tip 1 – Wrap your pipes in heat.  Know the importance and crucial role played by exterior piping. When cold water pipes touches the building exterior and the water aren’t used inside while the temperature outside are extremely cold, all those conditions will lead to the pipes freezing. They won’t freeze if the water is always moving. Therefore, it is recommended that you leave faucets open while you’re not at home for a period of time. However, it is more important to be able to insulate the entire living space.

Tip 2 – Make it a regular habit to check the pipes in your home. Part of which is for you to see signs of rusting, buckling, or leaks. Remember that you may not be an expert in seeing what’s right but you still can conveniently spot what’s wrong. So what you need to do is see the visible pipes in the house. It’s not common for a homeowner to check them but it is something that must be done. You don’t want to wait until a puddle of water suddenly appears in the basement and then your stuff is gradually damaged by that existing leak. The same holds true for the area under the sink. It is your job as a homeowner to check the said area in order to make sure no pipes are leaking.

Tip 3 – When you have a clogged sink, it also corresponds to an eventual leak, and you definitely don’t want that to happen. So under the kitchen sink, find time to check it once in a while and then observe if there are any drips.

Tip 4 – Enabling frost-free hose bibs will prevent freezing and therefore they should be installed in particular scenarios. This is especially true when the pipe is going through a cement foundation. With the hose bib, you can shut off the water closer to the inside of the home in order to prevent freezing and eventually leaks.

Tip 5 – Also, find time to check the radiators in order to be sure they are draining in the right direction. Keep in mind that radiators will need a good level as well as an open valve. So the first thing you must do is check the pitch. You need to make sure that the radiator is pitched back towards the source of the steam. The purpose of this is for the water to drain back to the boiler as soon as it condenses.

Tip 6 – Obviously no one wants to suffer from hot water heater leaks. Whenever your water heater starts to leak, that’s a sign that it is already broken or dead. The worst of these scenarios is when the lining wears and you see water dripping from the base of the heater. At this moment, you don’t have a choice but to call the manufacturer. You may even be required to change it if the problem can no longer be fixed.
